The members of Staunton, Waynesboro, Augusta Tennis Association award two $1,500 scholarships annually to two graduating high school tennis players from Staunton, Waynesboro, or Augusta County high schools. The awards are presented to the winners at the spring awards assembly held at his or her school.
The scholarships are presented in memory of Judy Fisher, a former SWAT board member who passed away in 2002. Judy Fisher, a native of Denver, Colorado, was a very successful investment banker with Prudential Bache in New York. After twenty years in the banking business, Judy bought a farm and retired to Augusta County, where she moved with her mother, Catherine. Judy loved the Shenandoah Valley and soon made friends because of her pleasant smile, sparkling eyes, and gentle manner.
Judy was active with the Staunton Tennis Association, the Valley Conservation Council, and other organizations, where she gave very generously of her time and talents. She was particularly interested in the education of children and the preservation of nature. She loved tennis and wanted children to have the opportunity to learn to play tennis and further their education. This scholarship honors Judy's memory in keeping with her desire to give young people opportunities to further their education.
